FOR PARENTS

Regular and prompt attendance is absolutely essential to gain the maximum benefit from the instructional program. Parents have a legal responsibility for their child’s school attendance. Children should be in school every day, unless they are ill. When a child returns to school after any absence, the classroom teacher must receive a written explanation that is dated and signed by the parent/guardian. Any child absent due to a communicable disease such as chicken pox, measles, ringworm, etc., must present a doctor’s statement to be readmitted to school.

Food

Breakfast and Lunch program: Carnegie School participates in the federally-subsidized breakfast and lunch program. To qualify for a free or reduced lunch, parents must complete the full application and meet federal-income guidelines. Please do not send your child to school before 8:15 a.m. Staff is not available to monitor children sent to school before this time.

Canteen Truck: Students are not allowed to purchase food items from the canteen truck that is usually parked in front of the Ameritech Building located on the corner of 61st Street and Dorchester. There is no crossing guard or staff member assigned to this corner. All purchased food items will be confiscated and discarded. Continued infractions of this rule will result in disciplinary action.

Beverage Machine Use: With the permission of the student’s classroom teacher, fruit juice and pop may be purchased in the lunchroom. Each can of beverage is sold for 65 cent with the proceeds going toward the purchase of supplies and materials. Primary grade students (K-3) may purchase juice only. Intermediate and upper grade students may purchase juice or pop.

Behavior

Bus Conduct: Because of the safety of all students riding the buses to and from school is of primary importance, the following common sense rules must be followed:
1. You must be seated and face the front.
2. You may talk quietly but make no unnecessary noises.
3. Do not talk to the driver unless absolutely necessary.
4. Keep arms and heads inside the bus.
5. Do not litter or throw anything out the window.
6. Be quiet when the bus is crossing railroad tracks.
7. Obey the bus attendant at all times.
Infractions of these rules jeopardize the safety of all riders. Consequences for bus misconduct are as follows: 1st infraction- warning; 2nd infraction- parent conference; and 3rd infraction- suspension from bus.

Dress

Uniform Dress Code: Carnegie's uniform dress code specifies that each child will wear the school uniform. Girls will wear dark blue skirts, jumpers, or slacks with a yellow blouse and blue criss cross tie. Boys will wear dark blue slacks with a yellow shirt and a dark blue tie. Blue sweaters, yellow or blue socks (or tights) and dark dress shoes (NO GYM SHOES) complete the uniform. Students generally conduct themselves in a mannner similar to the way they dress and groom. Any type of dress or grooming which is disruptive will not be permitted. Shorts are not allowed for either boys or girls. Earrings in boys' ears are not allowed. Long gold or silver chains with different paraphenalia worn outside of the shirt or blouse will be confiscated and returned to the parents. Hats, caps or hair rollers are not to be worn in school.

Gym Uniform: Each child must participate in the Physical Education Program. The Carnegie gym uniform, consisting of a t-shirt and shorts with the school’s name and logo, may be purchased for $14.00. If your child does not have a gym uniform, an order form will be sent home during the third week of school. Those students not in uniform will be prohibited from participating in the full spectrum of physical education activities.

Additional Rules

1. Be on time for school, and enter and exit by the assigned door. If absent or tardy, bring a note from home signed by your parent or guardian.
2. Coats, jackets and other outside clothing are not permitted in the classroom.
3. Students are expected to have basic school supplies (pencils, pens, notebook paper, crayons, and scissors) with them every day, and they are to be prepared to work.
4. Food is not permitted inside the classroom. Students are not to eat, drink, or chew gum in class. Exceptions to this rule may be made only by the school administration.
5. Fighting, karate kicking, imitating wrestling moves, rough housing or any other actions that may lead to injury of a student are grounds for suspension. Students are to report to the teachers, security personnel, or the office any situation which they consider threatening.
6. Profanity and other forms of verbal disrespect of students and adults will not be tolerated in the school building or on the school grounds.
7. Disruptive behavior, such as refusing to obey or to complete work, cannot and will not be tolerated in the classrooms.
8. Do not throw anything while on school grounds or in classrooms: snowballs, rocks, spitballs, rubber bands, paper clips, etc. Do not litter school floors.
9. Never leave the classroom alone or without permission and a pass. No running, pushing, or loud talking is allowed in the hallways.
10. Walk quietly in orderly straight lines in the halls to show respect for other classrooms.
11. During fire and disaster drills, always exhibit quiet, orderly behavior.
12. In the auditorium, students will act in a respectful manner during all assemblies.
13. Good eating habits must be practiced in the cafeteria. Do not throw food or any other objects. Do not touch food on another person’s tray. Use good table manners. Remain seated and talk softly. Do not make unpleasant references to food. Obey the rules and follow the directions of the lunchroom supervisor. Leave the area clean and ready for the next person. No food or beverages should be taken out of the lunchroom at any time.
14. Use restroom facilities appropriately. Do not stand on the toilet seats or hang from the stalls. Do not damage the urinals or commodes. Do not throw wet toilet paper on the ceiling or in the restrooms. Respect the privacy of others. Do not mark on the walls. Do not linger in the restrooms. Show pride in your school by keeping it clean.
15. Toys, games, electronic devices, and athletic equipment will be confiscated if brought to school. All items will be returned to the parent at the end of the school year.
16. Contact lenses are to be worn for medical reasons only. Students will not be permitted to wear cosmetic contact lenses.
17. Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom either to give or receive keys and /or other personal items. Requests for such matters will be granted to parents and guardians only.
18. Permission to use the school telephone during school hours will be granted for emergencies only. Students will not be allowed to call home for things that are their responsibility, e.g. homework, library books, permission slips, book bags, and gym uniforms.
19. All property should be treated with respect. It is the responsibility of the parent to pay for the repair or replacement of damaged and/or missing articles/property.
20. The school playground and the Beehive Park located on 62nd and Dorchester are off-limits to students until 3:00 p.m.
21. Clothing, headbands, armbands, hair rags, head scarves, and shoestrings which are symbolic of gang activity will be confiscated and returned to the parent.
