The Carnegie Local School Council (LSC) is elected for a two-year
term and consists of the school principal, six parents, two teachers,
and two community representatives. Meetings are held every other
month at Carnegie School. Dates and times of meetings will be announced
throughout the year. Parents, teachers, staff and interested community
members are encouraged to attend.
Carnegie parents are welcomed and encouraged to volunteer in all
classrooms, programs and extracurricular activities. All volunteers
must wear ID badges at all times while on duty and may pick them
up in the main office. Please contact Mrs. Mary Robinson, our School
Community Representative, if you are available to share your time
with us to help our school reach greater heights.
The Parent Coffee Clutch meets every Monday morning at 9:00 a.m.
in Brazier Hall. This is a time for parents to come together and
learn about school policies, procedures and activities. It is also
an opportunity to share fellowship and ideas. All parents are welcome.
For the protection of our students and staff, all persons entering
the building must first report to the main office for a visitor's
pass. The pass is to be returned to the office before leaving the
building. Parents are always encouraged to visit Carnegie School.
Parents may have conferences with teachers from 8:30-8:50 a.m. and/or
during those times that the teacher has indicated to the parent
that he/she is available for conferences. If you desire a visit
with any other staff member or the principal, please call the school
so that a conference can be arranged. We encourage the faculty to
keep the lines of communication open between the home and the school
in order to secure the best possible chance of success for each
student. In working together with the home toward the common goal
of excellence for every student, we hope that you will make yourself
available should the need arise for contact after school hours.

Homework
Homework is a necessary component in the sequence of a child's education
and should be assigned to:
Provide reinforcement,
practice, application and enrichment of what is learned in class;
Prepare students
for class participation;
Develop independent
and responsible work and study habits;
Extend learning
activities beyond the school hours;
Provide an opportunity
for student creativity;
Foster a closer
relationship between home and school;
Provide opportunities for the student to gain experience in the
utilization of community resources; and
Provide for positive on-going parental involvement in the student's
education.
The following are suggested time allocations for the teacher-directed
homework assignments:
Kindergarten 15 minutes per day
Grades 1,2 & 3 30 minutes per day
Grades 4,5 & 6 45 minutes per day
Grades 7 & 8 90 minutes per day
These should be total across all subjects.
Students are responsible for maintaining their homework
journal by listing subjects, assignment dates, due dates, and date
turned in. Students are expected to compete all homework assignments
carefully, accurately, and in a timely manner. They should make
necessary corrections on the returned homework and share with their
parents the teacher's evaluation of homework assignments. They are
to seek help, as needed, from parents and teachers. Parents are
to provide a space and a quiet time for their child to complete
the homework each night. They should monitor homewok as it it being
done and review the corrected homework returned by the teacher.
Parents should assist their children by visiting libraries and museums
together. Using other community resources can ge helpful to the
student when completing homework. Finally, parents should contact
the teacher if there are any problems with homework. (From the Chicago
School Reform Board of Trustees Homework Policy, June 26, 1996.)

Illness/Accident/Injury
If your child becomes sick or injured at school, we make every
effort to immediately notify you. Therefore, it is important that
we have an updated Emergency Information Sheet that lists your current
home, work, pager and cellular phone numbers as well as two numbers
of relatives, neighbors, or friends who are authorized to pick up
your child in case we are unable to reach you. No student will be
sent home alone. Please report any changes of phone numbers to the
office as soon as possible during the school year.
In cases of serious illness or injury, the Chicago Fire Department
Paramedics will be notified. Unless a parent or guardian is immediately
available, a staff member will accompany students when they are
transported to the nearest hospital. In such cases, we will continue
attempts to contact you.

Arrival and Dismissal of Students
All students
are to be in line with their classmates at the 8:40 a.m. bell and
are to enter the school when the second bell rings at 8:45 a.m.
During inclement weather, children are admitted to the building
upon their arrival. They are expected to exhibit appropriate school
behavior while waiting for class to begin.
Tardiness: Pupils entering after 9:00 a.m. are considered tardy.
Parent conferences will be held when children are consistently tardy.
If an excessive number of absences or tardies continues, the school
will notify the Region 5 Office and/or other individuals for corrective
action.
Bused
students: Tardiness caused by the late arrival of
buses is not counted on the child’s school record.
Schedule:
Hours for Pre-Kindergarten children are 9:00-11:30 a.m. for
the morning session and 12:00-2:30 p.m. for the afternoon session.
Teacher preparation periods are 8:30-9:00 a.m. and 11:30-12:00 p.m.
Parents are asked not to interrupt these important times.
Dismissal:
All students are dismissed from school at 2:30 p.m. Students
are expected to go straight home or to pre-arranged child care after
school, unless they are involved in after school activities. Bused
students are to go directly to their bus after dismissal. Arrangements
for after school activities should be made in advance between students,
parents, guardians, and teachers. Students will not be allowed to
call home about theses matters. Participants in the After School
Program class sessions (2:40-3:40 p.m.) are not permitted to leave
the school building until 3:40 p.m.
Students are to be picked up on time. All students should be picked
up no later than 2:40 p.m. (3:50 p.m. for students in the after
school program). Staff are not available to watch students who are
not picked up on time. Primary students left stranded should inform
the office staff that they have not been picked up. They are not
to play or wait outside.
Early
dismissal of Students: Students being picked up before
the scheduled time will be released to their parents or guardians
only. Parents must sign out their child on the official school log
in the main office to document the student’s official release
from school. We understand that, occasionally, students must be
released early for personal matters. However, arbitrary and repeated
requests for early dismissals will warrant a conference with the
principal. No early dismissals will be granted after 2:15 p.m.
